Hey guys, sorry for all the recent site outtages, I've now gotten round to updating the system so that I can carry on developing my new project without any interference to ahoy at all, at the minor cost of a slight reduction in computing efficiency which is a lot less than I thought it was going to be and is well within acceptable tolerances.

So anyway, the site should remain stable and active at all times now, please enjoy Ahoy :)

Guys (and gals), I've just installed my new Diamond software on to the ahoynoob server and I'm using it currently to develop a new dotcom startup focussed here in the UAE.

The reason I mention it is because when I'm working on the site there is a small chance that an update will cause the server software to restart and that might conflict with a page request your trying to access for a few seconds.

Please bear with me on this, I would love to do the development on a seperate server but this one is all I have right now.

If a page does fail to load, just wait 3 - 5 seconds and hit refresh, the server nearly always bounces back within that length of time.

Anyhoo, once this new development is up and running I think it will be high time I spruce Ahoynoob up again using the new Diamond system. Shouldn't be too long!

And we are back :)

Sorry guys, the account that the hosting is paid from ran out of funds and the server got suspended until I could organise a top up.

Everything's back to normal now.

Well Ahoy has been here for over 2 years now and it's grown slowly over that time.

There's now a few regulars (thanks guys), and a number of occasional posters that pop in from time to time.

I don't want the situation to be that only people who I get along with feel they can access the site, which is an issue which is going to come up more and more as the site gets bigger and people come in who get along with the rest of the crowd but for whatever reason have a personality clash with me.

I'm not sure how to deal with that one to be honest. Adding some sort of block user function will mean that discussion threads can end up with holes in them like they do on facebook, but without it there will always be a temptation for me to use my SSH super-powers on people, the result of which is that even if I'm just making a joke using it, others will feel their free speech is being suppressed and that if they say the wrong thing they will get well.. bullied.

It would suck big time being the only person that actually pays to be on the site, whilst simultaneously also being the only person who has to exercise self-restraint at all times when interacting with others because they know that I have the ability to change absolutely anything on here, and that automatically colours their reactions and the things they are willing to say to me.

The comedy scene in the latest episode of red dwarf with the dominator dude was somewhat striking, the guy demands people argue with him, but then as soon as they do he kills them. At least here on Ahoy the process of being "killed", by your erstwhile dominator, is pretty painless and resurrection is guaranteed as long as you want it.

I want this place to be fun for the greatest possible fraction of the end users. Sites with draconian rules like the facebook friend spam rule, really annoy me and I want to offer something different here, a place where there are basically no rules, just a small simple system to defend the site against trollers and spammers.

There is no way I can prevent my own ability to enter the site as the super-user, but at least I do actually care about the end users rights and feelings, unlike many folks who run forum sites and do whatever they hell they want all the time without a second thought.

Any suggestions are welcome, and I promise not to cut your virtual head off too badly :P

I'm flying off to Abu Dhabi in about 5hours time, so I'm probably not going to have a huge amount of time to be adding new stuff for a while.

Therefore you guys have the place pretty much to yourselves for the time being.

Hey All,

I just wanted to say thanks, it's really great logging in and seeing a whole bunch of new stuff has turned up since earlier!

I want to keep Ahoy about it's users, this is your site and it's my job to make it the best it can be for you because without you guys it is nothing.

I remain totally committed to the notion that there will never be any form of banning mechanism or censorship here on Ahoy, and that the earlier incidents involving revron and llewop where they got their accounts turned into amusing comic devices will the be the absolute limit on what can happen. They of course were totally free to carry on using the site, there was no barrier to doing so but their own ego's, and that's really the point, this is a comedy arena as much as anything else and everyone is fair game, including yours truly. Just be warned, if you want to have a comedy rock off with me and I can find a humorous connected and well known icon, you might find yourself transformed ^^

Minor point I know, but the time stamp on my posts is still GMT. Any way of changing it to BST? Do other users see only GMT?

Well I was just mucking around with the Sections display thinking about making it so you need to do less scrolling and after working with the new Diamond code at this level, I think the time has come to redeploy AhoyNoob using the new tech.

Perhaps you'd like to collaborate on it Mike, I could PM you the login details if you want.
