It's been a long time since I saw this film, infact the last time I saw it I was still a very hardcore atheist and I liked this and thought it was very clever and right on the money.
I watch it now and see something different. Whilst I'm still primarily agnostic, my spiritual awareness has risen immensely since that point. Portrayed here is the Devil himself, the evil manipulator, the deviant who wants to dominate you and make you suffer. I'm not saying I believe such a character actually 'exists' per se, but working within the narrative, this person is not to be trusted, he lies through his teeth. So if we take him to be a liar and all his words to be complete falsehoods what does that tell us? The exact 180 degree opposite of everything he says is the truth. He says that for his own amusement God gave man instincts and then set the rules in opposition, for his own amusement. The opposite of that is that God gave man instincts and set no rules at all, the Devil here wants us to believe that God is this evil judgemental despot and the poor old Devil is the good guy who loves and embraces humanity despite it's many flaws. If you follow the logic, the result is that it wasn't God who made up the commandments or punishes his creations for breaking them, but rather the Devil invented the idea of God making up commandments when really God's only commandment is to do as you wish but to love your neighbour as yourself. What do you think? |
