Hey guys, I've been pondering why it is that we are not getting many new sign ups. There have been a few but usually the new people just don't say anything at all.
I know from my own experience that signing up to a new site is a pain in the arse, and even though I've made the sign up procedure on here as quick and painless as possible I have this feeling that it is acting as a barrier to entrance. So I've been thinking maybe the way to solve this is to greet new people by simply asking them to provide a nickname, and giving them instant ability to add replies to comments. The rest of the features such as avatar upload, ability to click respect, flag rimmers and so on will remain only for people who open a proper account, but at least this way any passing surfers might be more tempted to interact. Also since it will be more tempting for rimmers to leave anonymous messages without signing up, there will be more action on the noob or not system, which is meant to be as much a feature for fun as it is to keep the place tidy and troll free. Thoughts? |

Why not give it a try?
If things don't work we can always go back to where we are now. The one thing I would hate to see happen though is a load of silliness gobble up the bandwidth. Again, a try costs nothing does it? |

True enough.
As for the bandwidth, we are barely using any of it right now. I'm transferring around 60 to 70 megabytes a day or about 2 gigs a month out of my 200gig allocation (I think it's about 200gig's I'd have to check) that's like less than 1% utilised right now. |

Did you do any checks on those that just viewed the site without signing up? | |||

I don't keep any tabs on people using the site except for logging the IP when, and only when, they are voting in the noob or not section.
The old version did have a method for logging how many times a thread was viewed, I don't think I got round to putting that feature in again on this version. Might be worth investing some time in. I'm getting quite close to finishing the update to my perlnights site and launching the next version of my software (now known as Diamond). When that is done I'm planning to do the next version of Ahoy using it and if you think this version looks good, you ain't seen nothing yet! |
